A 63-year-old man who was shot by an Orlando police officer at a local gas station on Friday afternoon has died.
At around 2:20 p.m. on Friday, January 3, Orlando Police Department officers were notified by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office about an armed man who had been spotted at the BP gas station located near the intersection of John Young Parkway and Bus Center Boulevard in Orlando, according to OPD.
OPD officers and OCSO deputies quickly responded to the gas station and observed the male suspect, later identified as Marvin Martin, who was wearing all black clothing and wielding a gun. The police department stated that the law enforcement officers gave Martin multiple commands to drop his gun.
When Martin refused to drop the firearm, he was subsequently shot by an OPD officer. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries.
While at the hospital, Martin experienced “unknown complications,” and he passed away from his injuries on Saturday, January 4.
According to police, Martin was a convicted felon with multiple prior charges related to drug possession, theft, and aggravated battery. In addition, he was released from prison in 2023 after serving a 20-year sentence in Miami-Dade County for second-degree murder, carrying a concealed firearm, and resisting an officer with violence.
The officer involved in the shooting was not hurt and will be placed on paid administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement conducts an independent review of the incident. The results of that investigation will then be submitted to the State Attorney’s Office.
OPD will also conduct its own internal investigation into the shooting.
“The officer did have their body worn camera on during the incident,” stated OPD. “Per policy, we will make the body-worn camera available to the public within 30 days.”
