A hit-and-run driver who was arrested following a fatal crash that claimed the life of an Orlando teenager in September of 2023 has been sentenced to a decade in prison.

On Monday, February 24, 2025, the State Attorney’s Office announced that Alexis Omar Leon Lima was adjudicated guilty and has been sentenced to 10 years behind bars for his involvement in a fatal accident that occurred on September 17, 2023

At around 3:45 a.m. on the day of the crash, 19-year-old Orlando resident Latrell Anderson was standing on the sidewalk near the Henao Contemporary Center, next to a parked vehicle on Edgewater Drive, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

For unknown reasons, a driver – identified as Lima – was traveling northbound on Edgewater Drive in a 2005 Ford Expedition when he lost control of his vehicle and ran off the right side of the roadway.

Lima’s vehicle ran into a pole, collided with the building, rotated clockwise, struck another pole, and continued rotating until it collided with Anderson and the parked vehicle, a 2019 Jeep Cherokee.

Anderson was transported to AdventHealth Orlando, where he was pronounced deceased.

Another individual who was within the community center was injured after they were struck by debris. That individual, a then-22-year-old Orlando woman, was transported to AdventHealth Orlando for treatment of minor injuries.

After the collision, then-20-year-old Lima fled the scene on-foot. According to witnesses, Lima and several others fled westbound on Edgewater Drive, towards John Young Parkway.

Hours later, Lima was found by authorities and was taken into custody on charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving death, leaving the scene of a crash involving injuries, and driving without a license causing death.

“Leaving the scene of a crash that results in property damage, injury, or death is against the law,” said FHP in a media release on February 24, 2025. “The Florida Highway Patrol is reminding Floridians about the consequences of leaving the scene of a crash and the challenges law enforcement face when investigating a hit-and-run crash.”

FHP states that anyone involved in a crash should stay at the scene, call for help, and follow these steps:

1. Make sure you and any passengers are okay. Remain calm.

2. If possible, move to the side of the road. Remove your keys if you get out of your vehicle, move off the roadway, and stay in a safe area.

3. Check on others involved. Call 911 if anyone might be injured or a vehicle is inoperable.

4. If there are no injuries or major property damage, gather information. Get the name, driver license, insurance, and tag information from the other driver(s). Take photos of the vehicles and information if you can’t write it down and then file a report online.
