A 1-year-old child died on Wednesday night after being struck by two vehicles while chasing after a dog in Daytona Beach.
At around 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23, Daytona Beach Police Department officers responded to the 2900 block of N Halifax Avenue in reference to an accident involving a young child, according to DBPD.
When officers arrived on-scene, they observed that the child had sustained “severe injuries” after being struck by the vehicles.
The police department stated that a preliminary investigation revealed that the child had exited a nearby residence, following a dog that had escaped.
While chasing after the dog, the child walked into oncoming traffic and was hit by a vehicle. Moments later, a second vehicle struck the child.
Paramedics arrived at the incident location and transported the child to a local hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. While at the hospital, the child was pronounced deceased by medical personnel.
No further details were provided by law enforcement.
DBPD stated on social media that the investigation into this incident remains “active and ongoing.”
