A passenger was killed, and three others were hospitalized, after their SUV struck a tree and overturned along Interstate 4 in Volusia County on Monday morning.

The single-vehicle crash occurred on I-4 Westbound, near mile marker 125 in Daytona Beach, at around 10:50 a.m. on Monday, May 12, according to a preliminary report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

A trooper noted that five individuals were heading westbound on the interstate in a Ford Expedition when their vehicle veered off the roadway and onto the median. The SUV then proceeded to collide with a tree before overturning several times.

Four of the SUV’s occupants – the driver and three passengers – were transported to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach for treatment of serious injuries.

FHP stated that a fourth passenger, identified as an adult female, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on-scene.

The crash remains under investigation, according to FHP.

Due to the accident, the inside lane of I-4 Westbound is currently blocked near mile marker 125.
