A knife-wielding man was shot and killed by Orange County Sheriff’s Office deputies on Monday afternoon following a standoff at an Orlando apartment complex.
At around 12:45 p.m. on Monday, June 23, a female victim contacted OCSO to advise that her boyfriend had been “smoking drugs” and “holding her against her will with a knife” all night, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies responded to the Isles at East Millenia Apartments located on Lake Fountain Drive in Orlando, where they made contact with the victim. She confirmed that her boyfriend, identified by OCSO as a 57-year-old man, had “threatened her with a knife.”
According to OCSO, the man barricaded himself inside an apartment, and deputies attempted to communicate with him for several hours. During this time, the victim was outside of the apartment and not in any danger.
The sheriff’s office states that the standoff came to an end when the man exited a room in the apartment and moved toward deputies. He allegedly had a knife in his hand, which prompted two deputies to fire their service weapons at him.
The man sustained gunshot wounds and was treated at the scene by paramedics. He was then transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries. His name was not released by law enforcement.
“As is our standard procedure, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting and will turn over its findings to the State Attorney’s Office for review,” said OCSO in a social media post on Monday evening.
In addition, OCSO will conduct its own internal investigation into the deputy-involved shooting.
The two deputies who fired their service weapons have been placed on temporary, paid administrative leave pending the initial FDLE review.
