A suspect was shot and killed by Volusia County deputies on Saturday night after he allegedly charged at them while wielding a knife.
According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, the deputies responded to a home located in the 1400 block of Derbyshire Road in Daytona Beach at around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 5, after receiving reports of a stabbing incident. Upon arrival, deputies found two victims – a 16-year-old boy and 39-year-old man – who had sustained multiple stab wounds.
The victims were transported to a local hospital in stable condition, where their injuries were treated.
While at the incident location, deputies were informed that a male suspect was inside the home, and they made announcements for him to exit the property. VCSO stated that the deputies also learned that another individual was possibly inside the residence as well.
In order to rescue any additional victims, a team consisting of VCSO deputies and officers from several law enforcement agencies entered the home. As law enforcement searched the interior of the property, the suspect allegedly “charged out of a bedroom door” while screaming, and a “knife [was] raised above his head,” according to the sheriff’s office.
The suspect was then shot multiple times by law enforcement officers. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
According to VCSO, no deputies or officers were injured in the shooting.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident. The VCSO deputies involved in the shooting have been temporarily placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure following a fatal shooting.
No further details were released by the sheriff’s office.
