A DeLand man accused of secretly recording his female roommate and distributing nude images and videos of her to others online is facing additional charges, weeks after he was arrested on more than 100 felony charges.

On Wednesday, July 23, while still in custody at Volusia County Jail, 28-year-old David Lee Van Moorsel was served on warrants from the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office (Florida), charging him with sexual battery, battery, video voyeurism, and unlawful use of a communications device.

Back on Monday, June 16, Volusia County Sheriff’s Office detectives launched an investigation into Van Moorsel after his ex-girlfriend reported that he had been “secretly recording their female roommate in compromising situations” over a two-year period, according to VCSO.

The sheriff’s office stated that Van Moorsel’s ex-girlfriend allegedly discovered hidden cameras in a bathroom and on a bedroom bookshelf. Additionally, she told detectives that Van Moorsel had used the internet to share nude images/videos of the roommate with other individuals.

During the investigation, detectives seized Van Moorsel’s cellphone, and a search of the device allegedly revealed “numerous voyeuristic videos of the roommate.” The cellphone also contained “online communications about sharing and trading voyeur content,” according to VCSO.

Van Moorsel is a personal trainer in the Daytona Beach area, and VCSO stated that multiple videos of women working out at a local Gold’s Gym were also found on Van Moorsel’s cellphone. However, the sherif’s office stated that these videos were “taken in public areas of the gym,” which “did not violate Florida law.”

A criminal history search of Van Moorsel revealed that he has a prior conviction for sexual assault in Montana, where he was charged with touching a 13-year-old relative. He was also accused of watching another 13-year-old girl in the shower.

Van Moorsel was placed under arrest and booked into Volusia County Jail, where he is currently being held without bond. He was initially charged with 40 counts of digital voyeurism, 40 counts of unlawful use of a two-way communications device, and 30 counts of possession of child pornography, which was allegedly discovered during VCSO’s investigation.

In a social media update this week, VCSO stated that Van Moorsel is also facing additional child pornography charges following a forensic examination of his electronic devices.
