AAA is activating its free transportation service, Tow to Go, for the Labor Day holiday weekend to prevent injuries and deaths caused by impaired drivers.
Beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, August 29, and running until 6 a.m. on Tuesday, September 2, AAA’s Tow to Go program will provide a free ride and vehicle tow to impaired drivers that do not have an alternative way to get home.
Since its inception in 1998, the program has helped saved lives by removing nearly 30,000 impaired drivers from U.S. roadways, according to AAA.
The free confidential ride is available to members of AAA as well as non-members, and a tow truck will take the vehicle and driver home or to a safe location within a 10-mile radius.
In some instances, AAA may need to find other arrangements to help get an impaired individual to their home.
Appointments cannot be scheduled in advance, and the Tow to Go program might not be available in rural areas or during severe weather conditions. The program operates on most major holidays in Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Michigan, North Dakota, Nebraska, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Colorado (Denver), North Carolina (Charlotte), and Indiana (Fort Wayne/South Bend).
On its website, AAA states that its Tow to Go program “reminds partygoers to plan ahead and choose a designated driver, stay where they’re celebrating, or arrange other safe transportation.”
