Karl-Joachim Porth, 87, of Apopka, Florida, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones.
Born in the small town of Booßen in Frankfurt/Oder, Germany, Karl-Joachim was the beloved son of Reinhard Karl Porth and Erna Anne Hulda Meinert.
In 1961, Karl-Joachim embarked on a courageous journey from Europe to Puerto Rico, a bold step toward a new life and a lifelong dream. It was there that fate introduced him to the love of his life, Nydia Romero Cruz. Their meeting marked the beginning of a beautiful story, bringing him one step closer to the United States, the “land of the free,” as he so fondly called it.
With Nydia by his side, he learned Spanish, embraced a new culture, and built a life rooted in love and resilience. Together, they shared 61 extraordinary years of marriage, years filled with laughter, devotion, and countless adventures.
A true entrepreneur at heart, Karl-Joachim opened Euromeat Specialties, a business he poured his heart into for five decades. Known for his work ethic and pride in his craft, he retired at age 74 to spend more time with his cherished family and grandchildren.
Karl-Joachim had an adventurous and spirited soul, always drawn to the thrill of the outdoors and the challenge of mastering new skills. He found joy in snow skiing, ice skating, biking, and hiking through the woods, and he swam great distances in the open ocean with ease and determination. A disciplined athlete, he held a black belt in Judo and proudly earned the title of national champion in Puerto Rico. His passion for exploration led him to earn his pilot’s license and ride motorcycles, especially his prized BMW.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Nydia Porth; his son, Heinz Rainer Porth (Angela Upchurch Porth); his daughter, Caroline Porth McCauley (Mathew John McCauley); and his five grandchildren: Chantelly Porth, Linda Gabriella, Emma-Grace Upchurch, Rainer Upchurch, and Gisella Marie.
Karl-Joachim is also remembered by his loving family in Germany: his brother Manfred Porth (Anna-Elisabeth Braun); Christina Porth Knispel (Wolfgang Knispel); niece Stephanie Knispel; and nephews Markus Knispel and Jürgen Porth.
Karl-Joachim will be deeply missed for his adventurous spirit, sharp wit, strong work ethic, and the love he gave so freely to his family. His legacy lives on in all who had the privilege of knowing him, and his memory will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, October 10th at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 834 S. Orange Blossom Trail, Apopka, FL 32703.
A Celebration of Life will follow immediately after the service in the Parish Center.
All are welcome to join in honoring and remembering Karl-Joachim’s remarkable life.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Karl Joachim’s memory. Contributions may be given during the collection at the Memorial Mass or made online at: wesharegiving.org/app/giving/WeShare1779.
