One person was killed, and another was seriously injured, after a motorcycle struck a sport utility vehicle that was turning at an intersection in Volusia County on Wednesday evening.
The fatal crash, which involved a 2023 BMW X3 and a 2001 Honda motorcycle, occurred shortly after 6:20 p.m. on Wednesday, October 22, at the intersection of U.S. Highway 1 and Art Center Avenue in New Smyrna Beach, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.
The report stated that the SUV was stopped at the intersection, facing east on Art Center Avenue. At the same time, the motorcycle approached the intersection while heading southbound on U.S. Highway 1.
A trooper noted that the driver of the SUV, a 21-year-old New Smyrna Beach man, attempted to make a left turn onto U.S. Highway 1. During that turn, the SUV entered the direct path of the motorcycle.
As a result, the front of the motorcycle crashed into the left side of the SUV. The motorcycle’s rider, a 31-year-old New Smyrna Beach man, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The SUV’s driver was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach for treatment of serious injuries.
The crash remains under investigation, according to FHP.
