In response to the federal government shutdown, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has ordered 40 U.S. airports, including Orlando International Airport (MCO), to reduce flights effective immediately.
Starting on Friday, November 7, there will be a 4% reduction in flights at MCO, and the 39 other airports identified in FAA’s emergency order. By next week, that reduction is expected to increase to 10%.
This action is expected to result in fewer arrivals and departures at the 40 airports, which will slow the rate of activity in the National Airspace System and assist airports that have staffing challenges.
“Ultimately, this order maintains the highest level of safety,” said the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA) in a statement.
GOAA further stated that the reduction in flights at MCO will likely affect travel plans, and travelers are encouraged to check directly with their airline regarding any delays and cancellations.
“The airport will be fully staffed to assist as much as possible during this time,” added GOAA.
