A 23-year-old man accused of getting into a fight at a DeLand house party has been arrested for aggravated battery after he allegedly grabbed a firearm and shot another man.

Shortly after 2:55 a.m. on Sunday, November 9, DeLand Police Department officers responded to the 600 block of N Kentucky Avenue in reference to a person being shot at a nearby residence. When officers arrived at the home, they found an adult male victim who had sustained two gunshot wounds, according to DPD.

The victim was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach for treatment of his injuries. No further details were provided regarding his condition.

Officers quickly identified DeBary resident Dawson Gregory Summers as the suspected shooter, and he was detained at the scene, according to DPD.

Detectives launched an investigation, which allegedly revealed that the homeowner had been hosting a large party at the residence. Summers and the victim both knew each other, and they were consuming alcoholic beverages at the party.

According to police, Summers allegedly began “antagonizing” the victim during the party, which prompted the victim to “challenge (Summers) to a physical fight.” They then proceeded to engage in “mutual combat.”

After the fight, Summers allegedly went to his vehicle, retrieved a firearm, and shot the victim twice. DPD stated that the suspected firearm used in the shooting was found inside the home’s laundry room, according to DPD.

Summers was placed under arrest and booked into Volusia County Jail, where he is currently being held without bond. He is being charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

The investigation into this incident remains active, according to DeLand police.
