A 17-year-old boy has been arrested, three weeks after he allegedly drove onto a Volusia County golf course and caused over $160,000 in damage.
On Monday, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office announced that 17-year-old Keller Adkins has been arrested on a second-degree felony criminal mischief charge in connection with the vandalism incident, which occurred at The Club at Venetian Bay in New Smyrna Beach.
At around 2:45 a.m. on Sunday, October 19, Adkins allegedly drove a vehicle onto the golf course’s second-hole green, causing $161,000 worth of damage to a 7,000-square-foot area.
During a press conference on Monday, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said that Adkins confessed to committing the crime because he was “bored.”
According to VCSO, an unidentified passenger was in the vehicle with Adkins when the vandalism occurred. The incident was allegedly filmed on the passenger’s cellphone, and detectives are reviewing that footage to determine if the passenger will be charged.
The sheriff’s office stated that Adkins’ mother is cooperating with investigators.
A few days after the vandalism incident at The Club at Venetian Bay, VCSO partnered with New Smyrna Beach police to offer a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the individual(s) who caused “extensive damage” to the golf course.
