A 35-year-old Titusville man fleeing from local authorities was killed on Friday after his car struck a palm tree, fence, and sign in Brevard County.

The fatal single-vehicle crash occurred at around 8:10 p.m. on Friday, December 12, near the intersection of Barna Avenue and Nickalaus Drive in Titusville, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

An FHP trooper said in the report that a 2019 Chevrolet Malibu was “actively fleeing” from Titusville Police Department officers. Prior to the accident, one or more of the car’s tires had been previously punctured after driving over stop sticks during the pursuit.

The car began “traveling on and off the roadway” while heading southbound on Barna Avenue. As the vehicle neared the Nicklaus Drive intersection, it veered off the roadway before colliding with a tree, fence, and sign.

The car’s driver and sole occupant was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. It is unknown if he was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to the report.

The crash remains under investigation.

No further details were provided in the report regarding the driver’s identity or the circumstances surrounding the single-vehicle accident.
