A Sanford woman died on Friday after she fell off a motorcycle on Interstate 95 in Volusia County.

The single-vehicle crash occurred on I-95 northbound at around 2:05 p.m. on Friday, December 26, near mile marker 235, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

The report said that a 2003 Harley-Davidson Dyna motorcycle was heading northbound on I-95, south of W Halifax Avenue, in the inside lane. The motorcycle had two occupants: a 45-year-old man (rider) and 34-year-old woman (passenger), both from Sanford.

The rider was later identified by FHP as Ricardo Lazaro Bernal.

In the report, a trooper noted that investigators believe the passenger fell asleep, which caused her to fall off the motorcycle and strike a guardrail.

When the rider, Bernal, noticed the passenger had fallen off the motorcycle, he came to a stop on the inside shoulder of the interstate.

The passenger sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. She was not wearing a helmet, according to the report.

Bernal was placed under arrest and booked into Volusia County Jail on the following charges: driving with a revoked license as a habitual traffic offender resulting in death (one count) and driving with no motorcycle endorsement (one count).

No further details were provided by FHP.

The crash remains under investigation.
