A retired Orlando Police Department officer was shot and killed on New Year’s Day during a family dispute.
According to OPD, officers responded to the 1200 block of Kozart Street shortly before 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 1, after receiving reports of a shooting incident. When officers arrived, they found an adult male victim lying on the ground, and he was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
The victim was later identified as 64-year-old Dennis Turner. He was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
OPD stated that a preliminary investigation revealed that the deadly shooting “stemmed from a family dispute,” and 58-year-old Jeffery Bernard London was identified as a suspect.
After the shooting, London allegedly fled from the incident location prior to the arrival of law enforcement. With the help of law enforcement officers in Polk and Highlands counties, London was located, placed under arrest, and booked into Highlands County Jail.
London remains in custody without bond, and he is being charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The victim, Turner, served the City of Orlando as a police officer for 23 years before retiring from the Orlando Police Department in 2018.
