A 19-year-old man was arrested by Sanford police after he allegedly shot another man in the parking lot of a local 7-Eleven on Friday afternoon.
Shortly after 12:30 p.m. on Friday, February 27, Sanford Police Department officers responded to the 7-Eleven located in the 2700 block of W 25th Street in Sanford after receiving reports of a shooting in the area.
According to SPD, an investigation revealed that Zeidan Markel McKever, 19, was allegedly with a group of people who were “engaged in a verbal altercation with the victim.”
The police department identified the victim in this case as 19-year-old Terrance Jerard Riggins.
The arrest report stated that the suspect, McKever, was observed on video surveillance footage exiting a vehicle and briefly entering the 7-Eleven convenience store. Moments later, McKever “immediately turned around” and headed back into the parking lot.
An officer noted in the report that McKever was wearing “a black hoodie, black face mask, black pants, black socks, and black slide-style sandals.”
According to the report, McKever allegedly approached the victim, Riggins, who was standing near the driver’s side door of a vehicle. McKever reportedly “brandished a firearm” and “fired numerous rounds” at Riggins, striking him twice in the leg and once in the “pelvic region.”
Riggins was also armed at the time of the incident and allegedly returned fire, striking McKever once in the foot. Both men then proceeded to flee from the parking lot in their respective vehicles.
The report mentioned that McKever and Riggins were both treated for their injuries at local hospitals.
In an update, SPD said that the victim, Riggins, “remains in critical condition” at this time.
An officer made contact with McKever at the hospital and observed that he was wearing the “exact same” outfit that the shooting suspect was wearing on the video surveillance footage, according to the report.
After being medically cleared, McKever was placed under arrest and booked into Seminole County Jail. He is being charged with criminal mischief and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
