Orlando police arrested a 17-year-old boy on Thursday after he allegedly brought a loaded gun to his high school.
According to the Orlando Police Department, school resource officers at Dr. Phillips High School (6500 Turkey Lake Road in Orlando) were notified on Thursday, April 9, that a male student on campus had a firearm in his possession.
Officers quickly identified the student, and he was located in his classroom. OPD stated that the student briefly attempted to flee before being taken into custody.
During a search of the student’s backpack, police reportedly found a loaded 9mm handgun.
The student was placed under arrest, and he is facing charges that include possession of a firearm on school property, possession of a firearm by a minor, and resisting arrest without violence.
“This is exactly how it’s supposed to work,” said Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith. “Our officers acted quickly on a tip from the community.”
No further details were released by OPD as the investigation remains active.
