One person is dead and another is injured following an early morning shootout at a Daytona Beach park.
According to the Daytona Beach Police Department, officers began investigating the incident on Sunday, May 31, after a patient arrived at a local hospital suffering from a gunshot wound.
Investigators determined that the shooting had taken place early in the morning on Sunday at Derbyshire Park, which is located at 849 Derbyshire Road in Daytona Beach.
In a media release, Daytona Beach police stated that an adult male victim and a woman were parked together at the local park when an unknown man approached them.
A disagreement reportedly ensued, and the unknown individual allegedly brandished a firearm.
According to police, the victim then retrieved his own firearm and demanded that the man leave the area. As the man began walking away, he allegedly turned around and fired multiple rounds, striking the victim.
The victim then reportedly returned fire, striking the man.
Shortly after the exchange of gunfire, the injured victim and the woman drove to a local hospital.
When officers arrived at Derbyshire Park, they located the other man who was reportedly involved in the shooting and observed that he was deceased.
“All parties involved have been identified by investigators,” said Daytona Beach Police on Sunday evening. “At this time, the motive for the encounter remains unclear, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.”
No further details were provided by police as the investigation into the deadly shooting remains active and ongoing.
