The Orlando Magic have officially named Sean Sweeney as the franchise’s 16th head coach.
On Monday, President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman announced the hiring, praising Sweeney’s attention to detail and ability to teach the game.
“We’re excited to welcome Sean (Sweeney) to the Orlando Magic family,” Weltman stated in a press release. “Sean brings a tremendous work ethic and a high degree of intensity that set the tone for everything he does.”
Weltman added that Sweeney is “grounded in competitiveness and accountability, while also embracing a modern, creative approach to coaching.”
Sweeney comes to Orlando after serving as the associate head coach for the Western Conference Champion San Antonio Spurs during the 2025-26 season. He will remain with the Spurs through the conclusion of the NBA Finals as they face off against the New York Knicks.
Prior to his time in San Antonio, Sweeney spent four seasons as an assistant coach with the Dallas Mavericks from 2021 to 2025. His NBA coaching resume also includes stints as an assistant with the Detroit Pistons (2018-2021) and Milwaukee Bucks (2014-2018).
In addition, Sweeney began working as a video coordinator for the Brooklyn Nets in 2011, which launched his professional career. As a member of the Nets, he transitioned to an assistant coaching position for the 2013-14 season.
Sweeney is taking over the helm following the dismissal of former Orlando Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley. Last month, Mosley was fired less than 24 hours after the Magic were eliminated by the top-seeded Detroit Pistons in the first round of the playoffs.
The incoming head coach will look to bring a championship to a franchise that originally joined the NBA in 1989. While the Magic have yet to win the NBA Finals, they have won eight division championships (1995, 1996, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2019, 2024, 2025) and captured two Eastern Conference titles (1995 and 2009).
The team plays its home games in downtown Orlando at the Kia Center, which is located at 400 W Church Street.
