Teen accused of reporting fake mass shooting at mosque in Seminole County

0

A California teenager who allegedly played gunfire sounds during a call to police to falsely report a mass shooting at a local mosque has been extradited to Seminole County to face felony charges for the “swatting” incident.

Alan Winston Filion, 17, was booked into the John E. Polk Correctional Facility on Tuesday, less than two weeks after his arrest in Los Angeles County.

According to a statement issued by the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office, on May 12, 2023, authorities received a call from a male who stated he was entering the Masjid Al Hayy Mosque located at 786 Myrtle Street in Sanford in order to conduct a mass shooting.

The caller allegedly made references to Satanism and stated that he had a handgun and explosive devices. He then began playing audio of gunfire in the background of the call.

Approximately 30 law enforcement officers responded to the mosque a short time thereafter. After arriving at the scene, police found that the scene was clear of any shooter and that staff at the mosque had not been harmed.

According to the statement, SCSO Domestic Security Division detectives then began investigating the matter as a swatting incident.

Through collaboration with the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, authorities determined that Filion, of Lancaster, California, had created several accounts on websites that offered swatting services. A collection of IP addresses connected to the accounts led to Filion’s home address.

In July 2023, the FBI served a search warrant on the residence. During the execution of the search warrant, authorities allegedly obtained devices that contained incriminating evidence.

A warrant was obtained for Filion’s arrest and on January 18, 2024, he was taken into custody with the assistance of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Investigators believe that Filion may also be connected to other swatting incidents across the United States.

Filion is being charged as an adult and is facing multiple felony charges including making a false report concerning an act of terrorism and making a false report to law enforcement concerning the commission of a capital felony. He is being held with no bond, according to court records.

In 1990, he and his wife felt called to leave Long Island, New York and move to the Orlando area to begin ministry work. They created Love of Christ Ministries which welcomed you to worship on Fridays overnight featuring outstanding worship ministers singing praises to our Lord. They also delivered messages and visited with those the Lord put on their hearts in England, Austria, Italy, Israel and several other nations.

Later in life he held praise and worship at Lake Lily in Maitland very early in the morning with his dear friend Benedict Caleb helping countless men through challenging times. Universal Orlando announced details on the five worlds of its new Epic Universe, which will nearly double the size of the park.

On Tuesday, the company provided new details about the park, which will feature five new worlds: Celestial Park, How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, Dark Universe, Super Nintendo World, and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter Ministry of Magic.

In a 7-minute video posted to the company’s website, Universal executives and personalities, including Stephen Spielberg and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mark Woodbury, offered brief descriptions of some of the “50 unique compelling experiences” that will fill the park.

Each section of the park will feature multiple rides, attractions, shops, and dining options.

The park opens with a large “chronos” that leads visitors through a “portal” into the Epic Universe’s first section, Celestial Park.

According to the company, Celestial Park will “put the park back into theme park” and will feature intricate landscaping, water displays, and three attractions, including a cosmos-inspired carousel and dancing water fountains.

Also among the attractions is Starfall Racers, a dual-launch roller coaster wherein riders will “race through the sky upon a shooting star,” according to the company.

In the How To Train Your Dragon, Isle of Berk will feature “the world’s first dragon-viking utopia,” as popularized in the film series. Officials billed the section as the “ultimate wish fulfillment” of flying dragons.

Both Dark Universe and Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic will expand upon classic and modern brands owned by the company. In the former, the company says it will reimagine its classic monsters into a “chilling experience” for fans of horror.

In the Ministry of Magic, the park will expand its Wizarding World of Harry Potter into a section themed around Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and its setting of 1920’s Paris and the British wizard agency popularized in the Harry Potter series.

To close out Epic Universe is perhaps the most highly-anticipated section, Super Nintendo World, which will feature Mario, Donkey Kong, Peach, and other popular Nintendo characters.

In addition to attractions, the park will also feature the Universal Helios Grand Hotel, a 500-room facility that will be integrated “like no other theme park in the world,” according to Woodbury.
