A 21-year-old man was arrested for attempted murder after a road rage shooting in Oviedo left a woman in critical condition.
Oviedo Police Department officers responded to Alafaya Trail and Alexandria Boulevard on Tuesday, June 28, at around 6:23 p.m. after receiving calls regarding a shooting.
According to police, witnesses, and cell phone video, the victim had been traveling southbound on Alafaya Trail in her vehicle and was stopped at the road’s intersection with Mitchell Hammock Road.
Another vehicle pulled up behind the victim’s vehicle with two occupants, including 21-year-old Keegan Johnson who was riding as a passenger. The vehicle began aggressively honking its horn.
As the light turned green, both vehicles proceeded through the intersection, and the vehicle in which Johnson was riding overtook the victim’s vehicle before continuing to a red light at Alexandria Boulevard.
At the red light, the victim, the driver of the second vehicle, and Johnson engaged in a verbal altercation that escalated after the driver and Johnson threw various beverages at the victim.
After being struck with a half-full can of Coca-Cola Coffee, the victim approached the vehicle and threw the can inside.
At that point, police say video shows Johnson allegedly firing two shots from a semi-automatic handgun at the victim, striking her in the torso.
According to the police, when questioned, Johnson provided statements that were inconsistent with the video and witness accounts of the incident.
Johnson was arrested and faces charges of attempted murder and aggravated battery with the use of a deadly weapon. No bond was set in the case, according to jail records.
