A man who has been previously convicted of five felonies is facing additional charges for his involvement in a shooting that left another man injured from gunshot wounds.
Darrius Jaques Garrett has been indicted on two counts of possessing a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon. Garrett faces a maximum of twenty years in prison if convicted on both counts.
According to court documents, on May 27, 2022, Garrett was charged with knowingly possessing a Glock pistol and .22 caliber rounds of ammunition in connection with a shooting that took place on Americana Boulevard in Orlando. During that incident, Orange County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the area and found a man who had sustained gunshot wounds to the torso. That man was taken to a hospital, treated and released.
Police obtained surveillance video from a nearby business that showed a suspect in the shooting, as well as a vehicle. Five days later, on June 1, 2022, Garrett was observed in the same area by deputies with the same Dodge Charger depicted on the surveillance video.
Inside the Charger, deputies found a loaded Glock firearm that they allege was used in the shooting.
The case is part of the Department of Justice Project Safe Neighborhoods program, which is a nationwide crime reduction initiative that aims to decrease violent crime in communities.
