Jose Antonio Pomales Carrion, 59, passed peacefully at the home of his oldest sister, Ramonita Diaz, in Orlando, Florida, on the afternoon of July 28th, 2022. He was born on April 7th, 1963, in Humacao, Puerto Rico, to his parents Mr. Ramón Pomales and Mrs. Ramona Carrión. In a time, in a place, and in a family that molded and formed the man who was José, whom we affectionately call Toñy.
José is survived by his son, José Antonio Pomales Jr., and his daughter, Jennitza Pomales. His surviving siblings are, in order, Ramonita Díaz, Vidalina Laureano, Juan Ramón Pomales, Luis Ángel Pomales, Víctor Manuel Pomales, Miguel Ángel Pomales, Carlos Alberto Pomales and Wilna Pomales.
During his life in Puerto Rico, José devoted his university studies and efforts to his career and passion, media communication and entertainment, such as television, newspaper, and radio. His first job in communication was at the newspaper called Oriental. He also developed his radio host and sales skills at Walo Radio Oriental.
In 1983, Toñy moved with his second sister Vidalina, to Boston, Massachusetts, where he promoted and expanded his dreams and achievements by working at the radio station ‘La Mega’. He hosted his own television show under the name ‘Variedades’ broadcast in prime time, at 6:00 in the afternoon, when each local family gathered to watch him and be entertained. In his program, Toñy had the privilege of interviewing local and international artists. While doing so, he also became a promoter of concerts and clubs.
In 1995, he moved to central Florida with his oldest sister, Ramonita – or as he called her, Conchita. While in Orlando, he was part of the inaugural team of the FM radio station known as ‘La Mega, 98.1’. He worked in the channel as a Marketing and Merchandising Sales Representative.
He later began working for the owner of multiple radio stations, Dr. Cherry. With his collaboration and hard work, Toñy developed as a Sales Manager, radio host, programmer and coordinator of social events in Jacksonville Florida and then in Greenville, South Carolina.
It was there that Toñy continued to work for Dr. Cherry where he held multiple functions in the radio stations. Among many, Toñy – or Junior as he is known artistically and publicly – was chosen to direct and manage several events in different regions and states across the nation where he was celebrated and recognized for his mark in the history of communication and music.
During the time of his illness, Junior continued to work tirelessly and with even more effort, dedicated to the passion of communication and the community.
José Antonio Pomales Carrión was a man with a big heart, kind, and very thoughtful. So much so that what was his was not really his, as he was very generous and giving. He had all the potential and qualities of the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance—which against such things, there is no law. He was spontaneous to help, but wise, disciplined and applied in his talents and abilities. He was a God-fearing man with morals and values. He was always present in the time of need, of joy and happiness.
For all of us who know who Toñy was in life, we know that his light shone in the place where he was, his smile was contagious, and his humor and stories made us laugh till tears. Although today we cry not with laughter, we do smile because he is with the saints in heaven.
