An 18-year-old Deltona man was arrested this week after admitting to firing at least seven shots at a car that he claimed cut him off in traffic.
Bryan Holmes was arrested on Thursday, September 15, by Volusia County Sheriff’s Office deputies who were able to track him to his home in Deltona after he shot at a vehicle while driving along State Road 415.
The shooting was reported at approximately 6 a.m. on Thursday by a victim who said she was traveling southbound on the highway when she was approached from behind by an erratically driven car with its headlights turned off.
As Holmes got closer to the victim’s vehicle, he tried to drive in between the victim’s vehicle and another individual’s car, forcing the second individual to drive onto the shoulder.
Holmes’ car made contact with the back bumper of the SUV being driven by the victim and then proceeded to pull alongside the vehicle.
After driving alongside the victim’s vehicle for several minutes, Holmes eventually began firing a gun out of the driver’s window at the vehicle.
Deputies say that the victim’s vehicle was struck at least seven times by bullets.
The victim was not injured in the incident, but was able to provide detectives with Holmes’ license plate information. Using license plate reader technology, detectives were able to identify the suspect vehicle and its registered owner. Within 30 minutes of the shooting, deputies arrived at the home address connected with the vehicle’s registration.
Nearly two and a half hours after the incident, at around 8:25 a.m., Holmes emerged from the home, entered the vehicle, and tried to back out of the driveway. He was stopped by deputies who asked if he had a gun on him. Holmes initially denied having a gun, before it fell from his waistline as he was being detained.
During their interrogation of Holmes, police say he admitted to firing several rounds at the victim’s vehicle. Holmes said the victim’s vehicle had cut him off in traffic and, after admitting to hitting its rear bumper, he said he fired “several rounds into the vehicle in an attempt to hit the tires and disable the vehicle,” according to VCSO.
Holmes was arrested on Thursday and released later that evening after posting bond. He is facing multiple charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and discharging a firearm from a vehicle, among others.
