A seventh grader at a private school in Deltona was arrested after he posted threats and photos depicting him pointing a gun at a student’s head on SnapChat.
Volusia County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested 13-year-old Colton Herring on Monday, December 12 after witnesses reported threats that Herring made through videos, photos, and text on the social media application SnapChat.
During a group SnapChat video, witnesses reported that Herring wrote messages with specific threats, including “I got 32 rounds for u,” and “I got a hollow point wit ur name on it.” In video, Herring allegedly threatened to shoot up his school and held a gun to another student’s head.
Herring also allegedly sent a photo of himself holding a black pistol while sitting in the driver’s seat of a vehicle.
On Tuesday, police interviewed Herring’s parents and they declined to allow a search of their home. A search warrant was obtained and during its execution, authorities seized several firearms and rounds of ammunition from the house. That included two handguns in the garage, a rifle and shotgun in the trunk of a car, and a 6-round magazine in Herring’s bedroom dresser drawer. Ammunition was also found in a home office and the master bedroom.
Herring is charged with three counts of making written threats to kill or conduct a mass shooting, and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Volusia County.
