A homeless man was arrested after police tracked down a stolen drum set to a homeless camp in the woods near a DeLand church.
James C. Whitmore, 22, was arrested on Sunday, January 15, by deputies with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office after receiving reports regarding a stolen drum set.
The pastor of New Destiny Community Church, located at 770 Greens Dairy Road in DeLand, contacted Volusia County police after he discovered that his church was burglarized and a $1,500 drum set was missing.
Deputies visited a homeless camp nearby and made contact with the occupants of the camp. During their visit, police found the drums in a tent where Whitmore was sleeping.
Whitmore admitted to the theft and was arrested on multiple charges, including burglary of an unoccupied structure, grand theft, carrying a concealed weapon, and possession of paraphernalia.
Whitmore was transported to the Volusia County Jail, where he is being held on $6,000 bond.
