A 38-year-old man and his 35-year-old wife are facing drug trafficking and weapons charges after he was arrested by a swarm of police moments after he dropped off his children at a local daycare facility.
Wynell Pitts was arrested on Thursday, April 6, after a multi-month investigation by multiple, local drug enforcement agencies into his drug-selling activities.
According to the DeLand Police Department, after Pitts dropped off his children on Thursday morning at a local daycare, he appeared to complete two drug transactions from his vehicle.
Detectives who were following Pitts waited for him to clear the area of the daycare before swarming his vehicle and placing him under arrest.
During their search of Pitts’ vehicle, authorities recovered a large collection of drugs, including 21.6 grams of fentanyl, 18.8 grams of cocaine, 8.3 grams of methamphetamine, and hundreds of pills ranging from Alprazolam to Oxycodone, among others.
Detectives and SWAT team members of the East and West Volusia Narcotics Task Forces, as well as the Deltona Narcotics Enforcement Team and Volusia Bureau of Investigation then executed a search of Pitts’ home.
During their search, authorities recovered more fentanyl, as well as hundreds of grams of Hydrocodone, 1,000 grams of cannabis, and at least a dozen firearms. Authorities also recovered at least $5,000 in currency.
Police say that all of the firearms and over 1,000 rounds of ammunition were readily accessible to the children living in his home. None of the guns had trigger locks. The drugs, including fentanyl and cocaine, were also easily accessible by children.
Pitts and his wife, Antiqua, are facing a collection of possession and trafficking charges, as well as child neglect. The couple is being held at the Volusia County Jail. Pitts’ is being held on a bond of over $1.6 million, while his wife is being held on a bond of $1.09 million.
