Man shoots friend in legs after dispute in Volusia

A De Leon Springs man was arrested on Friday for allegedly shooting a friend in both legs after the two engaged in an argument that escalated.

Volusia County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to reports of a shooting on Desoto Avenue shortly after 4 a.m. on Friday, August 11.

Upon arrival, VCSO deputies were told that the victim, who was uncooperative, was being driven to the hospital.

According to witnesses, the victim and his friend, 38-year-old Thomas Arney, had been drinking outside all night before they got into an argument.

Arney told police that his friend started breaking vehicle windows and moved toward him in an aggressive manner before he fired two shots at his legs.

A witness told deputies that the victim was not threatening Arney in any way before the shooting took place. According to the witness, Arney shot the victim once in each leg and then stood over him and pistol-whipped him in the head.

Arney was transported to the Volusia County Jail on Friday, where he remains in custody on $25,000 bond as of this writing. He faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
