The second officer who was shot by a suspect in downtown Orlando on August 4 has been released from the hospital and will begin recovering at home.
On Saturday, August 19, Orlando Police Department announced that one of the two officers who were shot and injured by 28-year-old Daton S. Viel in downtown Orlando earlier this month had left the hospital.
“We are grateful to report that the second officer was able to leave the hospital today and will be recovering at home,” reads a statement from OPD. “Thank you to the medical professionals at Orlando Health for their extraordinary work and for the overwhelming support from our community.”
Earlier this month, on August 8, OPD announced the hospital release of the other officer involved who was shot during the incident.
The officers, whose identities are being withheld through Marsy’s Law, were critically injured during a shooting near the Amway Center on Friday, August 4. After a multi-hour manhunt, police tracked the suspect, Viel, to a Holiday Inn located near Universal Studios.
Viel barricaded himself in one of the hotel rooms and refused to negotiate with authorities before he began firing shots at SWAT team members. He was killed in an exchange of gunfire.
In the weeks after the incident, the Orlando Police Heroes Foundation established a GoFundMe to help the two officers with their medical bills and recovery. To make a donation to the two officers and their families, visit the GoFundMe established for them.
