A 17-month-old boy passed away on Thursday night, days after he accidentally fell into a backyard swimming pool at a home in Deltona.
On Monday, June 15, Volusia County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a residence located in the 400 block of Leland Drive. According to the agency, the toddler’s family was getting ready to go to the beach when his mother found him face down in the water.
The mother told deputies that it had been approximately three minutes since she last saw her son. She mentioned that the sliding glass door was “accidentally left open,” and she believes that her son “slipped out through (it).”
VCSO stated that the mother pulled her son from the pool and immediately began performing CPR until first responders arrived at the scene to take over life-saving measures.
The toddler was initially transported to a hospital in Orange City before being transferred to an Orlando hospital for further specialized care. He remained hospitalized through the night of Thursday, June 18, when the tough decision was made to take him off life support.
In a social media post, VCSO said that foul play is not suspected, and the tragic incident appears to be an accidental drowning.
“The Volusia Sheriff’s Office sends its heartfelt sympathies to the boy’s loved ones,” said the agency.
