A 26-year-old Sanford man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of his cousin over a disagreement regarding a woman.
Marquez Henderson was taken into custody by the United States Marshal Service in Daytona Beach on Monday, August 28. He was transported to the John E. Polk Correctional Facility, where he is being held without bond on a charge of first-degree homicide.
Henderson is charged with fatally shooting his cousin, 24-year-old Jarkevis Canada, on August 19.
On that day, officers were called to the Georgia Arms Apartments located at 2600 Georgia Avenue in Sanford at around 8 p.m. in reference to a shooting.
Upon arrival, authorities located a victim, later identified as Canada, lying in the parking lot of the apartment complex.
Canada, who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to his chest, was transported to a local hospital, where he died as a result of his injury.
During their investigation, officials say they learned from witnesses that Canada and Henderson were cousins who had recently had a disagreement regarding a woman.
On the night in question, witnesses told police that Henderson was seen across the parking lot when he raised a firearm and shot at Canada. Henderson fled the area on foot after the shooting.
“There is no other word to describe this other than senseless. This family has been ripped apart tonight. Guns and violence are not the way to solve arguments,” said Sanford Police Department Chief Cecil Smith regarding the incident. “That one shot, is fatal and permanent.”
