5-year-old girl shoots herself with family’s gun

A 5-year-old girl from Deltona was injured after she allegedly got access to the family’s gun and shot herself.

Multiple crews from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, Deltona Fire Rescue, and other emergency personnel responded to reports of a shooting along Boxelder Street in Deltona on Saturday, December 16.

According to a statement issued by VCSO, the girl gained access to a shotgun under a family member’s bed and sustained an accidental gunshot wound to her leg.

Responding deputies found the little girl conscious and alert, but bleeding badly from the injury.

Multiple deputies worked to administer aid and apply a tourniquet before carrying the child to an ambulance.

She was transported to Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. According to medical staff at the hospital, the tourniquet application likely saved the child’s life.

The incident is currently under investigation by Volusia County Sheriff’s Office detectives.
