A Winter Park man who downloaded multiple images and videos depicting child pornography on his smartphone has been sentenced to over five years in federal prison.
On Friday, November 15, U.S. District Judge Paul G. Byron sentenced 35-year-old Kevin Thompson to five years and six months behind bars for receiving child sexual abuse material.
Thompson was indicted in January, and he entered a guilty plea on July 22.
According to court documents, an undercover Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent discovered that an Internet Protocol (IP) address in Central Florida was sharing files containing child sexual abuse material. An investigation was launched, which traced the IP address back to Thompson and his residence in Winter Park.
A search warrant was obtained and executed at Thompson’s home. During that search, FBI agents located dozens of files on Thompson’s smartphone that depicted the sexual abuse of children.
In an interview with agents, Thompson admitted to using his smartphone to download and view child sexual abuse material while at his home. He further stated that he had been viewing child pornography for “approximately 14 years.”
This case was investigated by the FBI, and it was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Sartoian.
Additionally, this is another case brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
