A former Volusia County teacher has been arrested for allegedly having a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old student.
In February of 2024, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation after staff members at T. Dewitt Taylor Middle High School (100 E Washington Avenue in Pierson) informed the school resource deputy that a teacher, Gingras, was in a “possible relationship” with a student.
Gingras taught high school intensive reading at the school.
VCSO detectives interviewed the student, who initially denied being in a relationship with Gingras. However, the sheriff’s office stated that cellphone evidence was uncovered, which “revealed the truth.”
During the initial investigation, Gingras was escorted off campus, and he was placed on leave by Volusia County Public Schools to keep him away from students.
The school district conducted its own internal investigation and chose not to renew Gingras’ contract at the end of the school year.
On Wednesday, January 29, 2025, nearly a year after the investigation began, Gingras was placed under arrest on a warrant for sexual conduct with a student by an authority figure. He was transported to Volusia County Jail, and he was released the following day after posting a $25,000 bond.
VCSO stated that Gingras must wear a GPS monitor as a condition for his release. In addition, he is not allowed to access the internet without a court order, and he must avoid contact with the student and witnesses in this case.
