A 36-year-old Oviedo police officer was killed in a car crash last week.

“It is with a very heavy heart the Oviedo Police Department announces the death of Officer Jimmy Serrano-Torres III,” said OPD in a social media post on Monday, April 14.

According to police, Serrano was off-duty on Friday, April 11, when his vehicle crashed in the Lake Nona area of Orlando.

No further details were provided by police regarding the single-vehicle accident that claimed the life of Serrano.

Oviedo Police Chief Dale Coleman said on Monday that the entire police department is “heartbroken and devastated” by Serrano’s death.

The police chief further stated that Serrano was “not only an outstanding officer, but also a bright light in our community. Always professional and courteous, he earned the respect of his fellow officers and the citizens he served. He will be deeply missed.”

Since August of 2021, Serrano had served as a patrol officer with the Oviedo Police Department.

Serrano is survived by his parents and siblings.
