A 16-year-old student died on Monday morning after she was struck by a car near Oak Ridge High School.
At around 8:10 a.m. on Monday, April 28, a 2012 Dodge Avenger was traveling westbound on Oak Ridge Road, west of the Winegard Road intersection, in the inside lane, according to report from the Florida Highway Patrol.
FHP stated that the Oak Ridge High School student was attempting to cross Oak Ridge Road, in a southerly direction from the north sidewalk to the south sidewalk, when she stepped into the direct path of the car.
The front of the car proceeded to strike the student. She was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced deceased.
The student’s name was not released by FHP.
The driver and sole occupant of the car, a 28-year-old Orlando woman, was not injured and remained on-scene.
A trooper noted in the report that the crash remains under investigation.
Orange County Public Schools released the following statement on Monday: “Families of Oak Ridge High School were notified that a student was struck by a vehicle this [morning] just off campus. School administration is assisting law enforcement as they investigate the incident.”
