A New Year’s Eve celebration ended with three arrests after several gunshots struck a home in Volusia County.

According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, a family of four was asleep in their home in the DeLand area when they awoke at around midnight on Thursday, January 1, to the sound of gunshots coming from a neighboring property in Daytona Park Estates.

Deputies arrived on-scene and searched the interior of the home. Pieces of drywall were scattered across one of the bedrooms, and a bullet was found under a pillow, which had narrowly missed a woman who was sleeping at the time.

In addition, VCSO stated that five bullet holes were found on the exterior of the home.

An investigation revealed that several rounds had been fired from a gun while individuals were celebrating New Year’s Eve near the incident location, according to VCSO.

The sheriff’s office identified 21-year-old DeLeon Springs resident Axel Jeremiah Gomez as one of the suspected shooters, and he was placed under arrest and booked into Volusia County Jail. He is being charged with shooting into an occupied dwelling.

There were no injuries reported, with VCSO describing the incident as a “close call.”
