Two people died in a fiery crash on Thursday night after their car left the roadway, overturned, and collided with construction equipment in Volusia County.

The single-vehicle accident took place at around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 19, near the intersection of Tomoka Farms Road and Bellevue Avenue in Volusia County, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.

FHP stated that the car, a 2005 Acura RL, was heading northbound on Tomoka Farms Road, south of Bellevue Avenue, when it veered off the roadway for “an unknown reason.”

The Acura proceeded to travel off the roadway to the right, where it struck an embankment and overturned. Moments later, the car crashed into nearby construction equipment.

A trooper mentioned in the report that the initial impact caused the Acura’s sole passenger, a 27-year-old Orange City man, to be ejected shortly before the vehicle became engulfed in flames. The passenger was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Acura’s driver was also killed in the crash. The report said that the Medical Examiner’s Office will contact FHP once the driver has been identified.

The crash remains under investigation, according to FHP.
