An 81-year-old man was killed, and a 75-year-old woman was seriously injured, after their SUV rear-ended a semi-truck on Interstate 95 in Brevard County on Tuesday morning.

The elderly man (driver) and woman (passenger) were heading northbound on I-95 in a Dodge Journey at around 6 a.m. on Tuesday, April 28, when they approached mile marker 191 (Wickham Road), according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

The SUV was reportedly traveling in the inside lane, behind a semi-truck that was “stopped due to traffic ahead on I-95 northbound.”

The report stated that the Dodge’s driver “failed to stop” for the semi-truck. As a result, the front of the SUV proceeded to strike the rear section of the semi-truck.

The driver of the Dodge was pronounced deceased at the scene. The vehicle’s sole passenger was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne for treatment of serious injuries sustained in the collision.

The semi-truck’s driver, identified in the report as a 39-year-old man, was not hurt.

The crash remains under investigation, according to FHP.
