Orlando will join three international cities in hosting the 2028 Olympic qualifier series.

On Thursday, the International Olympic Committee announced that Orlando, Tokyo (Japan), Shanghai (People’s Republic of China), and Montreal (Canada) will each host one stop of the Olympic Q-Series (formerly known as the Olympic Qualifier Series) on the road to the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, California.

The Q-Series will feature the following sports: 3×3 basketball, beach volleyball, BMX freestyle, climbing, flag football, and skateboarding.

“The Q-Series is an exciting global event on the road to the LA28 Olympic Games,” said International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry. “It’s one format, four stops, six sports. The goal is to boost athlete visibility and global fan engagement. We cannot wait for the series to kick off.”

Coventry added that the Q-Series will have a “festival feel,” with sports, music, and culture “coming to life” in the four host cities. In addition to entertaining fans, the event will offer participating athletes with a “decisive opportunity to secure direct quote places” for the 2028 Olympic Games before the multi-sport event begins.

The four stops of the 2028 Olympic Q-Series will be held on the following dates:

  • Tokyo (May 4-7, 2028).
  • Shanghai (May 11-14, 2028).
  • Montreal (June 1-4, 2028).
  • Orlando (June 8-11, 2028).

The sports that will be featured on each of the stops have yet to be confirmed.

“We’re thrilled that Orlando has been selected to host the Olympic Q-Series 2028, putting our city at the center of the road to LA28,” said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. “Our community has a proven track record of delivering world-class events and has earned its place as the nation’s premier sports destination. We look forward to collaborating across our community to host this four-day urban sport showcase, which will allow our city to once again play a part in the Olympic Games.”

Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings is also excited that Orlando is stepping onto the global stage as a host city for the Olympic Q-Series.

“Hosting a world-class competition of this magnitude highlights our community’s readiness to shine on the global stage,” said Demings. “By strategically investing Tourist Development Tax dollars into our sports venues, we are delivering an exceptional experience for athletes and fans while further solidifying our reputation as a premier destination for major international events.”

Further details on the 2028 Olympic Q-Series, including ticketing, broadcasting, and the sports events scheduled for each stop, will be announced at a later date.

The 2028 Summer Olympics are scheduled to begin in Los Angeles on July 14, 2028.
