Richard Albert Braun, born February 4, 1948, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2026, at his home in Winter Garden, Florida, at the age of 78. Born in Columbus, Ohio, Richard was the beloved son of Charlotte Schneider Braun and Richard Braun. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School and later earned his bachelor’s degree from Mt. Vernon Nazarene University, setting the foundation for a life defined by service, leadership, and unwavering dedication.
Richard devoted 37 years to the Columbus Fire Department, rising through the ranks through hard work, integrity, and a deep commitment to protecting his community. He retired as Assistant Chief, a role that reflected both his expertise and the respect he earned from those who served alongside him. His passion for public service continued as he accepted the position of Fire Chief of Cincinnati, where he led the department with strength and a clear vision for seven years.
He built a life with his wife, Susan, centered on faith and family. Together, they created a home rich in tradition—celebrating holidays, planning family vacations, and making countless memories at places they loved, especially Disney. Above all, Richard was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great grandfather.
Richard’s interests reflected his thoughtful and caring personality. He loved being with his family and was endlessly supportive of both his children and grandchildren. From coaching softball, basketball or volleyball, attending dance recitals and art festivals, or watching soccer from the sideline, his dedication to his family never wavered; if someone he loved was involved, Richard was there. He was the life of the party, always ready with a smile, joke, or wisecrack. He was equally ready to guide others with knowledge and wisdom rooted in faith and the lessons life had taught him.
Those who knew Richard will remember him for his faith, deep love for his family, steady leadership, and the values he lived by every day. His legacy lives on through his family, in the generations he guided, the firefighters he led, and the community he served with honor and passion.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Susan Braun; daughters Tammy Braun Huber (Randolph) and Tracy Braun Wickerham (Monty); grandchildren Meghan Beck, Matthew Huber, Ryhan Covington (Johnnie), Morgan Briggs (Caleb), Alisyn LeQuire (Austin); great grandchildren Harper, Adeline, Hazel, and Logan; sisters Cheryl Brofft (Bill), Christy Anderson, Becky Fisher; brothers John R.
