Two Kissimmee residents were killed on Tuesday afternoon after their SUV struck a concrete barrier and overturned on Florida’s Turnpike in Osceola County.

The fatal single-vehicle accident occurred at around 1:10 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23, in the southbound lanes of the turnpike near mile marker 240 in St. Cloud, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.

FHP stated that a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser was traveling southbound on the Turnpike when it veered off the left side of the roadway for unknown reasons and struck the inside lane’s concrete barrier wall.

The driver then reportedly overcorrected, which caused the SUV to travel off the right side of the road. Moments later, the vehicle rotated and overturned before striking a concrete barrier along the outside shoulder.

The driver, identified as a 56-year-old Kissimmee man, was ejected from the SUV during the crash. He was transported to Osceola Regional Medical Center in critical condition, where he later died from his injuries.

The passenger, a 65-year-old woman from Kissimmee, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

An FHP trooper noted in the report that the crash remains under investigation.
