A 15-year-old boy has died after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver while riding an electric scooter in Brevard County early Sunday morning.
The fatal crash occurred at around 3:50 a.m. on Sunday, June 21, near the intersection of Viera Boulevard and Independence Avenue in Viera, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.
The report stated that the 15-year-old Melbourne resident was operating an e-scooter on the outside eastbound shoulder of Viera Boulevard, traveling with the flow of traffic, when a car veered onto the same shoulder.
The right side of the car then struck the teenager. He was transported to Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, where he later died from his injuries.
While at the scene of the crash, FHP investigators recovered a passenger-side mirror, which belongs to a black 2009 or 2010 Hyundai Genesis, according to the report.
A search of the surrounding area was conducted, and investigators reportedly located a vehicle approximately 1.5 miles south of the incident location that had damage deemed consistent with the crash.
FHP homicide investigators have taken possession of the vehicle and are actively processing it for evidence.
Authorities noted that the crash remains an active criminal investigation, and no details regarding the identity of the driver have been released at this time.
