An Osceola County airport is one step closer to offering international flights after securing a historic designation from federal authorities.

On Tuesday, Kissimmee Gateway Airport announced it received preliminary approval from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for a User Fee Facility designation. This authorization paves the way for the airport to eventually handle on-site international arrivals and departures.

Airport officials stated that the expansion will support new international routes and help ease passenger traffic at the nearby Orlando International Airport (MCO). The Kissimmee facility plans to serve as a complementary hub for the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority by accommodating overflow travelers when MCO reaches capacity.

Before international flights can begin, the airport must construct a fully compliant CBP facility and execute a signed Memorandum of Understanding with the federal agency. Construction on the new facility is anticipated to begin in 2027, with the building expected to be operational within around two years.

Under the terms of the designation, Kissimmee Gateway Airport will provide the space, equipment, and security systems required for CBP operations at no cost to the U.S. government. Construction must commence within three years of the preliminary approval letter.

Mike Steigerwald, City Manager for Kissimmee, noted that the announcement reflects the persistence and dedication of everyone involved in the lengthy process.

“We now have the authorization to move forward, and we will do so strategically, working alongside local partners to plan, design, and build the facility that will unlock this airport’s full potential,” said Steigerwald.

The expansion is expected to generate measurable economic returns for Central Florida, specifically targeting the growing international tourism traffic from Latin American markets such as Brazil and Argentina.

City of Kissimmee Director of Aviation Shaun Germolus emphasized that having on-site CBP services will allow the city to attract businesses that rely heavily on international travel.

Looking ahead, Kissimmee Gateway Airport is also actively working toward becoming a designated Foreign Trade Zone to further strengthen its role as an international business hub.
