An early morning drive on State Road 40 turned deadly on Wednesday after an SUV collided head-on with a truck in Volusia County.

The fatal crash occurred at around 5:25 a.m. on SR 40, near Check Station Road, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

The report stated that a 30-year-old Astor man was traveling eastbound on SR 40 in a Buick Rendezvous when he lost control of the SUV for unknown reasons. The vehicle reportedly veered off the roadway to the right and onto the south shoulder.

According to FHP, the Buick’s driver then overcorrected to the left, which caused the SUV to enter the westbound lanes, where it crashed directly into an oncoming Ford F-350 that was hauling a trailer.

The driver of the Buick, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced deceased at the scene. His identity has not been released pending notification of his next of kin, according to the report.

The Ford’s two occupants, a 19-year-old Bunnell man (driver) and 39-year-old DeLand man (passenger), both sustained minor injuries. An FHP trooper noted that the passenger was taken to AdventHealth DeLand for medical treatment, and the driver later transported himself to a local hospital.

The deadly crash remains under active investigation, according to FHP.
