An 85-year-old Daytona Beach woman was killed and an Edgewater man was seriously injured following a crash on Interstate 95 in Volusia County early Monday morning.
The fatal collision occurred shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Monday, July 13, in the northbound lanes of I-95 near mile marker 248 (State Road 44), according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.
FHP investigators stated that the two vehicles involved in the crash – a 2017 Lincoln Continental and 2014 Kia Soul – were both traveling northbound in the center lane of the interstate, with the Kia traveling ahead of the Lincoln.
According to the report, the 42-year-old male driver of the Lincoln failed to observe the Kia ahead of him, and a rear-end collision ensued.
The force of the impact caused the Lincoln to run off the roadway to the right, coming to a final rest on the outside shoulder. The Kia was sent veering off the roadway to the left, where it stopped on the median.
The 85-year-old woman driving the Kia sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Lincoln’s driver survived the crash and was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center in serious condition.
In the report, an FHP trooper noted that both drivers were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the collision.
The trooper added that the crash remains under investigation.
Last month, a 71-year-old woman was killed and a 66-year-old man was seriously injured after their SUV was rear-ended during a multi-vehicle crash on I-95 in Brevard County.
