A disturbance call at a Volusia County home led to the arrest of a 30-year-old man after responding officers allegedly uncovered a hidden lab packed with hazardous chemicals.
On the morning of Sunday, July 12, Port Orange Police Department officers responded to the 6200 block of Palm Vista Street in reference to an unspecified disturbance at a nearby residence, according to the agency.
While investigating the initial incident, officers arrested a man, identified as Owen Kelly. Following his arrest, Kelly was processed and transported to Volusia County Jail, where he remains in custody on a $2,500 bond.
However, the investigation quickly expanded when officers reportedly discovered a hidden laboratory containing hazardous chemicals concealed inside the home.
The discovery prompted a massive, multi-agency response to safely handle the dangerous materials, with the Port Orange Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit taking charge of the criminal investigation regarding the laboratory.
Due to the dangerous nature of the chemicals, Port Orange police collaborated with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, Volusia County Fire/Hazmat Team, and Drug Enforcement Administration to process and mitigate the scene.
Volusia County Jail records show that Kelly is currently facing a misdemeanor battery charge. As of Monday, July 13, no additional criminal charges have been filed against him or any other individuals in connection to the hidden lab.
However, the Port Orange Police Department emphasized that the investigation by its Special Investigations Unit remains active and ongoing. The agency is urging anyone who may have additional information regarding this incident or the property on Palm Vista Street to contact their investigators at 386-506-5800.
