A 57-year-old bicyclist from Orlando was killed on Wednesday afternoon after he was struck by a Tesla on Colonial Drive.
In a report, the Florida Highway Patrol stated that the fatal collision occurred at around 1:20 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22, near the intersection of E. Colonial Drive and Woodbury Road in Orange County.
A 2022 Tesla Model 3 was reportedly traveling eastbound in the outside lane of Colonial Drive. At the same time, the 57-year-old man was riding a bicycle westbound—against traffic—in the eastbound bike lane, according to FHP.
When the Tesla’s driver, identified as a 23-year-old Orlando woman, attempted to enter the right turn lane toward the entrance ramp for State Road 408, the bicyclist allegedly traveled directly into the car’s path.
The front right side of the vehicle proceeded to collide with the bicycle, and its rider was pronounced deceased at the scene.
An FHP trooper mentioned in the report that the bicyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The driver of the Tesla was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The crash remains under investigation by FHP.
