Sports and entertainment next to Amway Center on horizon for downtown Orlando

A sports and entertainment district next to Amway Center is on the horizon as the next major upgrade to an ever-changing landscape in downtown Orlando.

Designed by local architectural firm Baker Barrios, the new entertainment district has been anticipated for years at the space adjacent to Amway Center. That space is currently being used as a parking lot during games and events.

Although no timetable for construction has been established, plans call for a 25,500 square-foot, 276-unit hotel with a deck bar, an 18-story office building, a 286-unit residential building, a 292-space parking garage, and a 1,769-space public parking area.

The main draw of the new area will be a 67,183 square-foot entertainment venue, which will seat thousands of visitors.

That venue will provide downtown Orlando with a space that can accommodate many of the performing acts that now travel to House of Blues and Hard Rock Live for shows.

Plans also call for a bowling alley and restaurants to populate the space, as well as 104,670 square-feet of retail space.

The project is one of many that Baker Barrios is behind in downtown Orlando. That includes Society Orlando, a new, multi-story apartment complex nearing completion along Orange Avenue.

It also includes Radius Apartments, which opened to the public in the past year and a half, and parts of the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.
